5 Things You Didn’t Know About a Newborn Photoshoot in Surrey

Welcoming your baby into the world is such a special moment, and I absolutely love helping families in Surrey capture those early days. As a Surrey newborn photographer, I feel so privileged to capture these fleeting moments for families across the county — from Guildford and Woking to Weybridge, Cobham, and beyond.

If you’ve never had a newborn photoshoot before, you might be wondering what actually happens on the day. A lot of parents arrive with questions, and many are surprised by just how relaxed (and enjoyable!) the whole process is. So today, I thought I’d share five things you might not know about a newborn photoshoot in Surrey — to help you feel fully prepared and excited for your own session.

The Best Time Is Earlier Than You’d Think

The ideal time for newborn photos is usually within the first 7–14 days. During this stage, babies are still beautifully sleepy and love to curl up, which makes it easier to capture those gorgeous, snuggly poses. I often photograph slightly older babies too. While they might not curl up in quite the same way, they can be more alert, which means we capture gorgeous expressions, eye contact, and stretches. Every age has its beauty — the key is to book as soon as possible so I can guide you on the best approach.

Sessions Are Calm and Unhurried

A newborn shoot isn’t something we rush. All sessions are baby led. Sessions often take 2–3 hours, and that’s totally normal. There’s plenty of time for cuddles, feeds, and nappy changes. I only shoot one newborn session a day, so there is no rushing and parents can just relax and enjoy the experience. Some families from Woking or Guildford bring older siblings too, and I make sure we work around their needs as well. My aim is always to create a calm, soothing environment where everyone feels at ease. Many parents even say they enjoy the chance to sit back with a coffee and watch while I gently settle and pose their baby.

You Don’t Need to Bring Much at All

I know how much effort it can be just leaving the house with a newborn, so please don’t stress about packing loads of things. I’ve got a full collection of blankets, wraps, little outfits, and props here in my Surrey studio. All you need are the baby’s essentials (nappies, milk, spare clothes) — I’ll take care of the rest. Before each session, I ask clients to complete a questionnaire regarding their favourite colours, set ups etc, so I will have the studio all ready with the props and outfits they like!

My Studio Is Cosy and Warm (on Purpose!)

When you walk into the studio, you’ll notice it feels lovely and toasty. That’s because babies are happiest and most relaxed when they’re warm, especially for those sleepy, snuggly shots. I always recommend parents wear layers, so you don’t get too hot during the session.

Family Photos Are Always Welcome

Although the star of the show is, of course, your newborn, I always encourage parents and siblings to join in too. These family portraits are often the most meaningful images — the ones that show the love, connection, and wonder of those early days together.

I usually recommend clients wear soft, neutral colours (think cream, beige, light grey, or pastels) that keep the focus on your baby and also to avoid big bold patterns or logos.

These photographs aren’t just for you now; they’re heirlooms your baby will cherish in the years to come.

✨ A newborn shoot is about so much more than the photographs themselves. It’s a chance to press pause in those whirlwind early weeks, soak in the joy of your growing family, and walk away with memories you can hold onto forever.

Whether you’re based in Guildford, Woking, Weybridge, West Byfleet, or anywhere else in Surrey, I’d love to welcome you into my studio and create a calm, joyful experience for you and your baby.

If you’d like to know more or book your newborn session, please do get in touch — I’d be honoured to capture this beautiful chapter in your family’s story.
