What to expect from your Newborn Shoot with Natalie Moss Photography

Becoming a parent is the most special thing in the world.  Having photographs of your newborn to capture this amazing time allows you to have stunning images to cherish for years to come.

Natalie Moss Photography is specially trained in newborn photography, so your baby is in safe hands.  I am a licentiate member with the Masters of Photography Association and the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers, being only one of a few photographers to attain their newborn safety certification certificate.

I hope this blog gives an understanding of what to expect when you book a newborn session.

PRE-SHOOT

Once you book a session with Natalie Moss Photography, I will send over a questionnaire for you to complete.  This will give me a better understanding of what you are looking for in terms of colours, favourite props and styling.  We will then go through this over the phone to discuss your questionnaire and talk about the session and any individual questions you may have,

DAY OF THE SHOOT

I always suggest to clients to have a morning shoot, as newborns tend to be better in the morning.  With sessions starting normally around 10am, I begin the day with setting up for the shoot.  I prepare the props and get the colours etc set up that we have discussed.  The studio is warmed up in advance, as with newborns, the studio needs to be a certain temperature to keep the babies safe.

When you arrive, I will get you a warm drink and we can begin the session.  I always tend to start the session with wrapped shots as newborns like to be swaddled and this is a good way of settling them and getting them in to a deep sleep.

As the session progresses, we move onto unwrapped shots and more difficult poses that need to be done when the newborn is in a deep sleep. The session is always baby led, so if we need to stop for feeding etc than that is what we do.  Hence why I say allow up to 3-4 hours.  All newborns are different, and some may need more feeding or comforting than others.  The questionnaire has allowed me to get an understanding of what you are looking for and your ‘wow’ shot, however, at no time will I continue with a pose if the newborn is unhappy.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE SESSION

I have everything in my studio, from blanket, props, covers etc.  I also have nappies, wipes and bags.  The only thing you need to bring is formula milk if using and I suggest a change of clothes for parents, as sometimes an accident may happy and so its good if you can change into something clean before parent shots at the end of the session.

If you have a sentimental item that you would like to include in one of the pictures, do please bring along and I will include for you.  Additionally, I do photograph newborns with their siblings, however, I would suggest this is done at the beginning of the session.

HOW LONG DOES A SESSION TAKE?

A session can take anything from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the newborn.  The session is always led, so we always stop when needed.  I only photograph one newborn a day, so there is no need to rush, as I want the experience to be an enjoyable and calm one.

WHAT SHALL I WEAR TO THE SESSION?

I always suggest to parents to wear neutral colours with no bold patterns or logos.  You do not want what you are wearing to distract from the newborn! As mentioned before, I do advise a change of clothes incase your newborn has an accident on you.

WHAT IF MY BABY HAS AN ACCIDENT ON YOUR PROPS/BLANKETS?

All parents seem to worry if their newborn has an accident, but, please do not worry.  All my items are washable and will be cleaned after every session with non-bio detergent.  To be honest, 99 percent of the time, we will have an accident during the session. It is more of a surprise if it doesn’t happen!

WHAT IF MY BABY IS UNSETTLED?

By allowing 4 hours for the session, we do not need to rush, so if your newborn is unsettled, I will use my soothing techniques to relax them and we just take our time.  At this stage I will wrap them, rock them gently and play white noise in the background.  Normally this does the trick! All newborns are different and the session will have different durations, but be assured we always get there.

I look forward to hearing from you.
