Are you first aid trained and know what to do in an emergency?
I covered the safety element during a newborn photography session in my last article, so I thought I would ask the question -would you know how to administer First Aid in an emergency?
When my children were born, I decided to take a first aid class as I wanted to feel that I would know what to do in an emergency. The course was fantastic and not only covered CPR, but how to treat a burn, a serious cut, a seizure, an allergic reaction and what to do if someone is choking. Thankfully, I have never had to give first aid in a serious accident, but, with the help of this training, it has given me more confidence to deal with a situation. I then continued to learn further first aid when I worked for several years in a infant school in Surrey, before I left to pursue my dream as a photographer.
So, do you have the first aid knowledge needed in an emergency? If not, I would highly recommend you attend a first aid course by Ashley Mills at Daisy First Aid. I thought it would be nice to tell you about the amazing courses she offers and so asked her a few questions for this post.
What service do you offer?
I offer First Aid classes for parents/family members and professional First Aid courses for people that work with children.
Where are you located?
As the name suggests I offer classes/courses in and around Elmbridge in Surrey. The postcodes I cover are KT6, KT10, KT11, KT12, KT13, KT14, KT22, KT23, KT24, GU22, GU23. There are other Daisy First Aid trainers nationally, so people can get in touch to find who is nearest to them.
How long have you been doing the job and what you made you get into this profession?
I have been training people for nearly 2 years but I was previously in Early years education for many years and wanted to reduce the long hours. As I needed to be first aid trained myself to look after children it was a natural transferable skill to go on to teach other people.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the knowledge that I’ve helped people become more confident in handling situations. Becoming a parent can be scary enough, so if I help them feel empowered to help in an emergency, that’s my biggest reward.
How do families benefit from your services?
If the children feel secure that Mum or Dad know how to help them if they’re ill or hurt, they respond better. It builds a great trust dynamic within the family from an early age. Parents visibly relax at the end of the class and believe that there is something they can do to help – increase in self esteem is priceless!
If you had to give one piece of advice to parents regarding what you do, what would it be?
Don’t keep putting off learning first aid! Many people KNOW that it’s a good thing to learn but it’s easy for it to get lower down the ‘to do’ list. It’s much better to have the information and skills and not need to use them, than be faced with an emergency and not know what to do – no one wants to feel helpless or that things are beyond their ability to help with.
